Description
Immerse yourself in the history of criminal law in Vienna. Start your tour at the monument against fascism and continue to Lobkowitzplatz, a former execution site, where a mayor of Vienna was beheaded in 1408. Hear, what this execution meant to the Augustinian monks in the neighboring monastery. Take a stroll past the home of the biggest mass-murderer of all time to one of the places, where once a pillory for punishment of marital offences stood. They served to amuse the people, though certainly not the delinquents. The hangman lived within the city walls in the prison on Rauhensteingasse, the basement of which served as a torture chamber for centuries. Follow the last way of poor sinners to the Steffl, before whose gate they had to do penance. Get to Hoher Markt, the old seat of the court. Many executions took place here until 1700 AD. 1421 Vienna's Jews became victims of justice - a Latin inscription tells about the incident at Judenplatz. Finally, pass the witch's house to get to Platz Am Hof, where mass executions used to take place.Includes
