The Spanish Court Riding School (Die Spanische Hofreitschule):
The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is the only institution in the world where the classic equestrian skills (haute école) has been preserved and is still practiced in its original form. It takes place in the official Winter Riding Hall of the Imperial Viennese Palace. Many years of training fuse horse and rider into an inseparable unit. The audience is treated to an unforgettable experience by the precision of movement of the Lipizzan horses in perfect harmony with classical music.
In the course of a gala performance you will be able to experience unique presentations of the Lipizzans horses in the most beautiful riding hall in the world, which was impressively outfitted by baroque architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach in the mid 18th century. It was originally built to provide aristocratic youths with the opportunity to take riding instructions.
Performances usually take place on Saturdays. In case you are not in Vienna on a Saturday, you can daily join the morning training sessions of riders and horses with music. They will give a good impression of what the performance lives up to and about the training program of the White Stallions; you also can join the riding school's guided tours and visit the royal stables. It will give you an excellent impression of the significance these Lippizzans horses had in the imperial court...many of us would wish to be kept in such lavish and luxurious surroundings...
