Description

We'll meet in the Albertina hall to check out the 'Gothic Modern' exhibition together. In ten chapters, the exhibition dives into the Modern era and its inspirations from the Gothic and early Renaissance. From Munch, Modersohn-Becker, Beckmann, and Kollwitz, the spectrum of artists who, in their search for originality, spirituality, and truthfulness, encountered the art of around 1500. They rediscovered the 'dark Middle Ages' and the dawn of the Renaissance, and saw the works as a way to express their own desires. We learn how they worked with old art to create something new. The themes range from nature (especially the forest) to the ecstatic body, from the dance of death – including Vincent van Gogh's smoking skull – to the Pietà and heavenly Madonnas, from gloomy visions to redemption through the sun. The Albertina exhibition brings together top-notch works of modern art and pairs them with old masters from its own collection. Prints by Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, and a medieval Vesperbild (Pietà), along with Renaissance portraits and a copy of Holbein's famous Christ in the Tomb, show how art around 1500 balanced between religion and representation. It's surprising that the avant-garde looked so far back. The Albertina shows that the juxtapositions work really well. I'd love to personally introduce you to the multifaceted art of image citation and the quest for the original in art around 1900
