Description
Honoré Daumer, the 'Michelangelo of Caricature,' is one of the most influential and fascinating figures of the 19th century. The political cartoonist is best known for his over 4,000 lithographs for newspapers like 'La Caricature' and 'Le Charivari' We're diving into the eventful and exciting history of France: monarchy and republic often took turns. Daumier used his cartoons to fight for the people's right to have a say. With the fictional characters Robert Macaire and Ratapoil, the artist shaped the public political discourse of his time. Robert Macaire embodied the ruthless pursuit of profit by the economically liberal July Monarchy, and Ratapoil stood for the infiltration of the Republic by Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. The Albertina is putting on a big exhibition for the Frenchman for the first time - with works that have never been seen beforeIncludes
