Description

Discover Vienna’s creative heart at MuseumsQuartier Wien, one of Europe’s most vibrant cultural hubs. Behind its baroque archways and modern courtyards lies a world where art, design, and dialogue meet. Among its many galleries and performance spaces, MQ Freiraum stands out as a space for reflection—dedicated to installations, video art, and socially relevant projects that shape contemporary thought. Currently on view is METABOLICA by Thomas Feuerstein—a visionary exhibition where art, science, and sustainability converge. Step into this “factory of life” and experience five immersive chapters that trace the transformation of matter and meaning: from the whaling ships and oil refineries of the industrial age to biotechnological visions of a sustainable tomorrow. Here, algae grow in transparent tubes, photosynthesizing light into color, while bacteria transform organic matter into biodegradable bioplastic. 3D printers shape this living material into sculptures that slowly return to the natural cycle of creation, decay, and renewal. More than a scientific experiment, METABOLICA is a poetic reflection on how art metabolizes transformation—environmental, cultural, and emotional. Over 100 drawings, mirrored objects, and texts bring Feuerstein’s “molecular cosmology” to life, connecting the Renaissance stone quarry with the digital bioreactor and pop culture icons like Mickey Mouse with the petro-modern age. Curated by Verena Kaspar-Eisert, the exhibition is as intellectually provocative as it is visually striking—a rare fusion of aesthetics and ecology. A visit to MQ Freiraum and METABOLICA isn’t just about viewing art; it’s about entering a living ecosystem of ideas. Whether you’re an art lover, an environmental thinker, or simply curious about the intersections of creativity and science, this experience offers a glimpse into how innovation can shape our collective future.
