Another café we visited in Vienna, with a long history and beautiful interiors. Eating in such places is a pleasure in itself. Beautifully presented and quite tasty. The service is impeccable. We've read some negative reviews about the service in cafés and restaurants in Vienna, and we truly cannot agree with them. We have never experienced bad service at Gerstner or anywhere else we have been. In Vienna, waiters often lack the "American-friendly" attitude of smiling from ear to ear, "how we do today guys," constantly approaching your table and pretending to be family. There, it's more about style: distance, ritual, procedure, and professionalism. In traditional cafés, the waiter can be a bit like the master of ceremonies and imperial-royal official all rolled into one. He's not necessarily there to entertain you. He's supposed to know where everyone is sitting, what they've ordered, how to serve coffee, how to put down the check, how not to disturb you, and how to keep the entire place tidy. And he often does this brilliantly. Many people perceive this as rudeness because they expect service to be "the customer is king, the waiter has to be super cordial." In Vienna, it's more like this: the customer is the guest, but the waiter also has their dignity. It's very European, a bit old-fashioned, a bit stiff, but often professional. The waiter might look a little disappointed in your existence, but after a moment, it turns out they remember your order and brought everything perfectly. A Viennese waiter doesn't want to be your friend. They want their coffee to be served properly. And actually, I respect that. We also read that customers were often unhappy about having to pay a tip. And yet, someone brought it to them, served it nicely, approached them, and asked if everything was okay and if they needed anything else. If someone doesn't want to pay for such service, they should buy a cake and take it to go. And we sincerely thank the wonderful staff at the Gerstner restaurant for their professionalism.
Our very first lunch in Vienna! Our guide gave this place a huge thumbs up. It’s a café that also serves food. The dishes were simple, but the absolute best part was the Vienna sausage. The spaghetti was really good too, and the wine was amazing! But the ultimate highlight had to be the coffee and dessert. If you're in Vienna's Old Town, you absolutely have to come here. 40 euro including gruner what wine. Highly recommend.
Such beautiful cafe. Good service. Reasonable pricing. An amazing experience. But the waiter gave us a sulky face when we didn't leave a tip. I'm sorry tipping is not an Asian culture.. if it is mandatory please do let us know beforehand, we don't mind at all.. Don't put up a smile for the sake of a tip. That remark, "In Austria we usually leave a tip." just before we left ruins our beautiful experience in your beautiful cafe.

What made the experience even better was the service. The staff were not only professional but genuinely attentive and welcoming, creating a smooth and relaxed experience without being intrusive. You feel taken care of in a very natural way. And of course, the coffee deserves a special mention—it was excellent. Rich, well-balanced, and clearly prepared with care, it perfectly complemented the overall experience. Overall, it’s a place we truly enjoyed and would happily return to. Whether for a relaxed coffee break or to soak in a classic Viennese atmosphere, it’s definitely worth visiting.
