Description
The Imperial Crypt is located beneath the church and monastery of the Order of the Capuchin Friars in central Vienna. It houses the mortal remains of the Habsburg emperors, empresses, and family members.
The crypt is a complex vault system maintained by the Capuchin Order, expanded over more than four centuries to include ten vaults containing sarcophagi, urns, and funerary monuments of the Habsburg dynasty.
Visitors can also learn about the designers and creators of the crypt’s rooms, each reflecting the dynasty's imperial power and grandeur. The remains of 150 Habsburg figures, including Maria Theresia, Emperor Franz Joseph, his wife Elisabeth (known as Sisi), and their son Rudolph, are interred in the crypt.
