Vienna in Spring 2026: Your Essential Travel Guide

Part of the My Guide Network Since 2006 180+ destinations

Spring is when Vienna hits its stride. The palace gardens fill with tulips, the Easter markets take over the city's prettiest squares, and for the first time in years, Eurovision lands in the Austrian capital.

Whether you're planning a long weekend around Easter or a full week in May, this guide covers everything you need to know — from what to pack to where the cherry blossoms are.
What's the Weather Like?

Spring in Vienna is pleasant but unpredictable. Here's what to expect month by month:
  • March: 3-12°C (37-54°F) — still cool, but the first blooms start appearing
  • April: 7-17°C (45-63°F) — ideal for walking the city, though showers are common
  • May: 12-21°C (54-70°F) — warm days, outdoor cafes in full swing

What to pack: Layers. Mornings can be chilly and afternoons warm, sometimes on the same day. A waterproof jacket is essential in April. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable — you'll cover more ground than you expect.

Easter in Vienna (April 2026)

Easter falls on April 5, 2026, with Easter Monday (April 6) a public holiday. The city goes all-in on Easter markets, and they're worth building a trip around.

The Three Easter Markets Worth Visiting:

Schönbrunn Palace Easter & Spring Market

March 25 – April 19, 2026 | Daily 10am–7pm | Free entry

This is the one everyone talks about. Set in the courtyard of Schönbrunn Palace, it's the largest and most atmospheric Easter market in Vienna. Expect Easter Bunny workshops for kids, live jazz, regional wines, traditional handicrafts, and some of the most beautifully decorated eggs you'll see anywhere.

The market transitions into a spring market after Easter and stays open longer than previous years — so even if you miss the Easter weekend, you can still catch it.

Old Viennese Easter Market on Freyung

March 20 – April 6, 2026 | Daily 10am–8pm

Home to Europe's tallest egg tower — around 40,000 hand-painted Easter eggs stacked into a single structure. Beyond the spectacle, there's an organic farmers' market, traditional crafts, and a beautiful historic square setting near the city centre.

Am Hof Easter Market

March 20 – April 6, 2026 | Daily 10am–8pm (food stalls stay open an hour later)

The quieter, more intimate option. Tucked into the heart of the Innere Stadt, this one is known for its art and craft booths. If you want to browse without the crowds, come here. Grab a mulled wine and take your time.

Easter Traditions to Try

  • Osterpinzen — traditional soft Easter bread loaves
  • Striezel — braided yeast breads you'll see at every market stall
  • Hand-painted eggs — ranging from simple to extraordinary works of art

Easter Events to Book Early

  • Vienna Boys' Choir Easter Mass (April 5, Hofburg Chapel) — this sells out, so book well in advance
  • Classical Easter concerts at the Musikverein and Konzerthaus — programmes featuring Mozart, Haydn, and Bach
  • Schloss Hof Easter Festival — just outside the city, a baroque estate with its own Easter market and family activities

Gardens and Parks in Bloom

This is where spring in Vienna really shines. The imperial gardens are stunning year-round, but between April and May they're extraordinary.

Schönbrunn Palace Gardens - Free entry

Tulips and daffodils fill the formal gardens from March through April. By May, roses start to bloom. Walk through the Great Parterre, explore the Kammergarten with its wisteria and rose tunnels, and find a quiet spot near the Neptune Fountain. It's equally good for a morning jog or an afternoon stroll with a camera.

Belvedere Gardens Free entry (Alpine Garden: €4.50)

The main planting arrangements begin in April, set against baroque French-style gardens with views of both the Upper and Lower Belvedere palaces. The Alpine Garden is a hidden gem — rhododendrons bloom from April, and there's a collection of over 100 Japanese bonsai trees.

Volksgarten (People's Garden) Free entry

From late May, over 3,000 rose bushes from more than 200 varieties come into bloom. It's right next to the Hofburg Palace and one of the most romantic spots in the city.

Cherry Blossom Spots (April)

Vienna has its own version of cherry blossom season. The best spots: Danube Island, Setagaya Park (a Japanese garden), Stadtpark, and Türkenschanzpark.

Other Parks Worth a Visit

  • Stadtpark — the golden Johann Strauss monument surrounded by spring flowers
  • Burggarten — crocuses and peonies in a peaceful setting
  • Prater — wide open spaces, perfect for a picnic
  • Major Spring Festivals and Events

Major Spring Festivals and Events

Spring 2026 is a particularly big year for Vienna. Here's what's happening:

Eurovision Song Contest

May 12, 14, 16, 2026 | Wiener Stadthalle
Vienna hosts Eurovision for the third time. The "Turquoise Carpet" opening ceremony takes place at City Hall on May 10. If you're in the city during this window, expect a buzzing atmosphere whether or not you have tickets.

Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen)

May 15 – June 21, 2026
Celebrating its 75th anniversary. This is Europe's premier cross-over festival — opera, theatre, dance, and music. The 2026 theme is "The Republic of Love," with the grand opening at Rathausplatz on May 16.

Vienna City Marathon

April 19, 2026
The course passes Schönbrunn Palace, the Hofburg, and the Giant Ferris Wheel. Even if you're not running, it's a great spectator event and the city has a good energy around it.

Genuss Festival

May 8-10, 2026
The Stadtpark turns into an open-air food festival with over 100 stalls showcasing regional Austrian food and wine. If you like eating your way through a city, don't miss this.

  • Kunsthistorisches Museum — Canaletto & Bellotto (Venetian view painters)
  • Lower Belvedere — Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller landscapes and Franz Xaver Messerschmidt's famous character heads
  • MAK — Helmut Lang special exhibition

Classical Music

Vienna wouldn't be Vienna without it:
  • Light classical concerts in baroque churches (Karlskirche, Peterskirche)
  • Vivaldi's Four Seasons performances
  • Fest der Freude (May 8) — a free concert at Heldenplatz celebrating WWII liberation, closing with Beethoven's Ode to Joy

Where to Eat and Drink

Spring brings fresh seasonal produce and the return of outdoor dining.
  • Naschmarkt — Vienna's most famous market, with stalls selling everything from fresh produce to prepared food
  • Rochusmarkt Farmers Market (Fridays and Saturdays) — smaller, more local, with regional farmers selling directly
  • Heurigen — traditional wine taverns in Vienna's wine-growing districts on the city's outskirts. Order a glass of Grüner Veltliner and a plate of cold cuts in a garden setting
  • Outdoor cafe culture — by April, the terraces open up across the city. Grab a Melange (Vienna's answer to a cappuccino) and settle in

Neighbourhoods Worth Exploring

You'll likely spend most of your time in the centre, but these areas are worth branching out to:
  • Innere Stadt — the historic core: imperial palaces, Easter markets, grand architecture
  • Neubau (7th district) — trendy boutiques, vintage shops, independent cafes
  • Leopoldstadt (2nd district) — the Prater park, Danube waterfront, a more local feel
  • Wieden & Margareten (4th & 5th districts) — neighbourhood charm, away from the tourist crowds

Practical Tips

Best time to visit: April and May offer the best balance of warm weather, blooming gardens, and manageable crowds. Easter weekend is busy — plan accordingly.
Getting around: Vienna has excellent public transport (U-Bahn, trams, buses), and the centre is very walkable. The Vienna City Card offers discounts on attractions and unlimited travel.
Travelling with kids? During school holidays (March 28 – April 6, 2026), children under 14 travel free on public transport.

Saving money:

  • Most palace gardens and parks are free
  • Easter market entry is free
  • Several concerts and festival events are free (including Fest der Freude)
  • Self-guided walking tours through blooming neighbourhoods cost nothing
  • Your Spring Vienna Checklist
  • Combine a palace tour with its gardens — Schönbrunn and Belvedere both work brilliantly for this
  • Stroll through at least one Easter market in the late afternoon when the atmosphere is best
  • Catch a classical concert in a historic venue
  • Find an outdoor cafe and do nothing for an hour
  • Take a boat ride on the Danube
  • Explore the Prater — the amusement park rides reopen for the summer season in spring
Spring 2026 is a standout year to visit Vienna. Between the Easter markets, Eurovision, the Vienna Festival's 75th anniversary, and the city's gardens at their best, there's more happening than most visitors will be able to fit in.

The city is at its most beautiful between April and May — warm enough to spend entire days outside, cool enough to walk comfortably, and full of events that range from world-famous to quietly local.

Pack layers, bring comfortable shoes, and leave room in your schedule for the things you'll stumble across by accident. That's usually where the best memories come from.
