Train stations in Vienna

All of Vienna's main train stations are presently getting a facelift and are under construction! So travelling to Vienna by train is presently quite complicated. The chaos is due to the fact that one "Central Train Station" will be built in the city centre to connect Vienna to all international destinations, while several smaller train stations troughout the city will connect the regional and domestic destinations. Construction work will not be finished till 2014 at the earliest, so we are asking for your patience...

Vienna "New" Central Station (under construction!)
The biggest train station called "Südbahnhof" has now been partly shut down and will open again as the new Vienna Central Station in 2014 - it will supposedly be one of Europe's most modern train stations. Therefore, trains now arrive at following stations:

Ostbahnhof - all regional and local trains from/to the east (e.g. from Bratislava) arrive here - it is located in the Schweizergarten, 5 min from the original Südbahnhof location.

All other trains, mainly to the south of the country leave from Vienna Meidling station. The long-distance trains (e.g. from the Czech Republic or Poland) will also end or start at this station.

Check out the Vienna public transport site for best connections to these stations - and our map for exact location.

Westbahnhof (under construction!)

Vienna's Westbahnhof is where most trains to/from Western Europe and Western Austria arrive to town. Also note that the airport bus stops right in front of the station building.

Vienna-Mitte Station (under construction!)

Here - right in the city centre - is where the most important airport transfer hub is located: you will find the direct airport bus here, the express train City Airport Train (CAT)  and the airport express S7 train (check our airport transfer section for further info).

Very convenient...if you are travelling on Austrian Airlines, or airlines of the same frequent flyer program, you can check-in your luggage at the check-in counter located at this location. Wien Mitte is also ideally connected to the city center network by two underground lines, tram and bus - so well worth considering!
