Description
From March 1938 until April 1945 Vienna was part of Hitler's German Empire. Hitler called Vienna 'the Pearl of the Reich', that needs a proper frame. But at the end of his reign a third of the City was destroyed and many thousand dead. Only among the Viennese jewish population about 70000 got murdered. How was life in Vienna during this time? What are still the visible remains of the Nazi reign in Vienna? Who were the people that supported the Nazis? Who didn't? If you are interested in getting an answer to these questions or if you are just generally interested in history, then this is the tour for you. See the historic balcony, from which Hitler gave his famous speech announcing the annexation of Austria to Nazi-Germany, learn about the treatment of the jewish population in the early days of the Nazi reign and maybe get a slight idea of what it was like during these times. We start at the Heldenplatz. The sight of Hitler's announcement of the annexation of Austria to Nazi-Germany. We then walk through the old imperial Palace, the Hofburg, to the Kohlmarkt. Here we see the history of some of the houses there, whose owner were victims of the so called 'aryanization', the praxis that basically allowed the stealing of jewish businesses. On the square Am Hof we will see the memorial to the firemen, who were executed for resisting the nazi terror and then further on the square Judenplatz we will see the memorial monument to the holocaust in Vienna. Down by the danube chanell we will see a squsre that was crated after the hotel metropole was destroyed at the end of world war 2. Infamous for having been Vienna's GESTAPO headquarters. Now a monunet remains. On the square Hoher Markt we can still clearly see the damages World War 2 did to Vienna before we head towards Saint Stephens Cathedral, on which there are more reminders of the War and the Nazi Regime, as one might think. Nearby we will see the building, from which the Nazis Organized the old town of Vienna before we head towards the Albertina, where we will end the tour at the main monument against war and fascism in Vienna.Includes
