Health and Medical Information

As in most EU countries Public Health Conditions in Austria are excellent. Vienna's hospitals have an excellent reputation internationally. Also, even the city's top medical experts must (by law) be available to everyone who holds a valid insurance, regardless of their age, income or living circumstances. The good news is that all travellers can rely on the  top experts and the Austrian health system, even if they are not insured - this is for emergency treatment only!

If you do not speak German - and you need help with medical questions or finding a doctor - please contact:
Vienna Medical Society Service Bureau for Foreign Patients -  tel: (01) 501 51253

The emergency number is 112. This number can be used to call the medical ambulance, fire department or the police.

Travel insurance:

Of course it is recommended to hold a valid travel insurance when you go on any trip abroad. As mentioned, if you need emergency treatment in Austria the medical experts are obliged to help.

  1. In that case, all EU citizens that fall sick during their stay here, will be asked to fill in a form sheet "E 111" - this will grant them use of all medical services in Austria.
  2. For Non EU members: there are social insurance agreements with the following countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iceland, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Norway, Sweden, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey. Nationals of these countries may have a care/treatment voucher issued with their home health insurance. This voucher can then be exchanged for a health insurance certificate (Krankenschein) at a regional health fund in Austria.
  3. Travellers from countries outside the European Union,  or the countries mentioned above: you should definitely arrange travel insurance before you leave home.

More information is available at the Vienna City Administration website.

Pharmacies:

Please note that in Vienna most drugs are not available over-the-counter and (no matter if prescribed or not) are sold in Pharmacies only, not in drugstores. In Austria it is usually the doctors that prescribe drugs (no matter if prescription is needed or not). So in case you need something specific take it with you!  Please note the pharmacies opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Saturdays from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Anyhow there are always 24-hours/7-days open locations throughout the city and a list of the nearest open pharmacy is posted outside of each pharmacy. Use this easy online address search to find the nearest one.
