Museum 21er Haus
Vienna
This truly remarkable museum was built as the Austrian Pavillion for the World Exhibition in 1958. Only shortly afterwards it was opened as Austria's first modern art museum and it houses since then Austrian Art beginning from 1945 till today.
Another highlight is the exhibit of important works of Fritz Wotruba - Austria's most well known sculptor and famous all over the world.
The museum is located in walking distance to the Belvedere (it is actually part of the same museum structure) and a good 'side step' if you are interested in the more modern art world to be found in Vienna.
Do not forget to have a look at the exceptional cinema here in the 21er house, and exquisite example of 1950ies interior design!
Insider suggestion: Have lunch on the fantastic terrace of the museum cafe! It is located right in the middle of an interesting sculpture park where you can take a stroll - it is off the beaten track and a truly relaxing spot!
